Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean, made up of Unguja (the main island, often called Zanzibar Island) and Pemba. It is famed for Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose narrow streets blend Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian and European influences from centuries as a hub of the spice and trade routes. Beyond its history, Zanzibar draws travelers with palm-fringed white sand beaches at Nungwi and Paje, turquoise waters, coral reefs, and a centuries-old spice-growing tradition that still gives the islands their nickname, the "Spice Islands".
Beyond Stone Town's maze of alleys and the old Sultan's Palace, Zanzibar's spice farms offer guided tastings of cloves, cinnamon and vanilla, Prison Island is home to giant Aldabra tortoises, and the north-eastern beaches at Nungwi and Kendwa are the best base for swimming and sunset dhow cruises.
