Explore Watamu
in Kenya

Watamu is a small beach town in Kilifi County on Kenya's north coast, about 25 km south of Malindi. It's best known for Watamu Marine National Park, one of the oldest protected marine parks in Africa, and for the crescent of white sand beaches that made it a favourite, lower-key alternative to the busier resorts further south.

Watamu Marine National Park's coral gardens are among the best in Kenya for snorkeling and diving, and its beaches are a key nesting site for green and olive ridley sea turtles, with local conservation groups running turtle-watching programmes. The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and Mida Creek's mangrove boardwalk, both close by, add birdwatching and guided nature walks to the mix.

Watamu is a short drive from Malindi and easily combined with a Malindi stay or a visit to the Gede Ruins. The calmest, clearest water for snorkeling is typically from December to March and July to October, outside the rainy seasons.
