Malindi is a coastal resort town in Kilifi County, Kenya, roughly 120 km northeast of Mombasa. It has deep historical ties to early explorers, including a stone pillar commemorating Vasco da Gama's landing in 1498, and a lasting Italian expatriate community that shapes much of its tourism today. Malindi Marine National Park protects some of Kenya's finest coral reefs just offshore, while nearby attractions include the Gede Ruins, Watamu, and the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, one of the largest remaining coastal forests in East Africa.
Malindi Marine National Park protects some of the coast's healthiest coral gardens, easily explored by glass-bottomed boat or snorkel, while the nearby Gede Ruins reveal the stone remains of a 13th-century Swahili town swallowed by forest. Watamu, a short drive south, adds turtle-watching and the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest's rare birdlife to the list.
